First things first, I’d like to congratulate Myra T. for winning The Frisky Fairy Giveaway! Thank you all for entering! I’m hoping to do another giveaway soon!
This past weekend I made the trek up to New York City to see one of my very best friends and also visit a few excellent sex-positive locations! Take a look at all the awesome things and places to go!
First things first I headed to the Museum of Sex, with my best friend to take a peek at their awesome Funland exhibit!
Unfortunately, their boob bounce was deflated and having some reconstructive surgery, so I couldn’t hop on those, which made me sad, but I got a free entry to the boob bounce when it reopens, and that’s pretty cool!
When you get in, the first exhibit is a Linda Lovelace display which is wonderful, and then you lead on to the Funland, which is a sexy carnival styled theme. First up you go through a hall of mirrors to find the g-spot (all the while a caped carnival worker is cracking a whip behind you). There’s a penis derby game, and a rock wall full of dildos and things.
There are a few other exhibits, most notably (and educational) being the sex in nature exhibit. It even covered masturbation, oral sex, and group sex in nature which I thought was pretty cool
Overall, I wish the exhibits were longer and had more detail to them. They were really fun, but not nearly enough information or entertainment for the price tag. I am pretty obsessed with the permanent collection though. From a condom dress to the most beautiful Saint Andrew’s Cross, the collection is wonderful! I only wish that there was more. If you happen to be in NYC though and want to check out a super fun, sexy museum, I highly recommend popping in for a visit!
The next place on our tour de sex was the Pleasure Chest! I stopped by the Upper East Side location and was so incredibly impressed. The space itself was absolutely phenomenal, including a dedicated workshop space for teaching. The folks at Pleasure Chest were in the process of cleaning up from their Anal State Fairground, and so we got to meander around the store and chat up their wonderful employees.
The one thing I loved about this place was how incredibly well stocked it is! I wish there were less products that weren’t body safe (unfortunately, they do carry jelly rubber and other problematic materials in some toys), though the employees are incredible at ensuring that every single person who comes in, walks out with a body safe toy that treats them well. I loved the wall of harnesses that people can touch and feel and try on!
One of the best things about this location is the people who work there! Denise from 2nd Street was super friendly and had a lot of knowledge about the products and about sex in general! Denise and the rest of the Pleasure Chest crew were so much fun to be around, and I was sad to leave!
Make sure if you’re in the NYC area that you stop by and visit the lovely folks at the Pleasure Chest!
The last stop on my tour was to the infamous Babeland! I had been looking forward to going to Babeland for some time, mostly because I had heard so much about it! I got there before the store opened and probably annoyed the crap out of the folks working at the store trying to get inside to finish my tour before I came home!
One thing I will say that is super cool about Babeland is their vintage vibe museum. The information they have on the history of vibrators is in depth and quite entertaining.
In addition, the store is very well stocked full of body safe and body positive products. The folks who work there are very knowledgeable and full of information about sex toys- including the upcoming changes to toy brands!
The only negative thing I have to say is that I find that Babeland is a bit more standoffish of a place. Maybe it’s because I came into the store early in the morning and the staff wasn’t quite awake yet, or that I had high expectations of feeling like I was coming home when I walked into a store that focuses on body safe products. Whatever the issue, I felt less like I was walking into a welcoming, safe space for sex products, and more like I was walking into a high end sex toy boutique. This is not a criticism of the store itself as the location is wonderful and the mission and spirit of Babeland is evident, but rather a criticism of my experience there. I personally prefer to shop for sex toys in locations that lead to in depth conversations with staff, though I can understand the want to shop a location that gives people more space when dealing with such sensitive topics. I’m hoping to visit the other locations of Babeland on my next visits there, and hopefully I just need to bring coffee before showing up when the store opens 🙂
